Frequently Asked Questions

What is compounding?

Compounding is the process by which a licensed pharmacist prepares a customized medication to meet the specific needs of a pet. Compounding pharmacists may combine, alter, or reformulate one or more FDA-approved medications to create a preparation that is better suited for an animal patient. For example, if a medication is only available as a tablet, the pharmacist may compound it into a liquid, cream, or capsule dosage form.

Why Do Some Pets Need Compounded Medications?

Some pets have specific medical needs that cannot be adequately met by a commercially available FDA-approved medication. In these cases, compounded medications allow a licensed pharmacist to prepare a customized treatment tailored to the pet’s individual needs. For example:

  1. A pet may have difficulty swallowing tablets but can more easily take a flavored liquid or another alternative dosage form.
  2. A pet may require a strength or dosage that is not commercially available.
  3. A pet may have an allergy or sensitivity to a particular ingredient found in a standard medication.

Pet owners should always consult their veterinarian with any concerns regarding their pet’s health, so the most appropriate treatment can be prescribed based on the pet’s unique needs.
