Sexuality in older age is equally important as it is throughout life. Expression of sexuality can be joyful, empowering, positive, and pleasurable. The idea of sexuality is multifaceted and is driven by need, desire, relationships, and behavior, all of which change over time.

Rather than focusing on fulfillment, pleasure, and an increased quality of life, the current focus on sexuality in later life is surrounded by biological dysfunction, hormonal imbalance, and disease related to aging. There is very little acknowledgement of the diversity of older adults in terms of sexuality, ethnicity, culture, and age. As modern society becomes healthier, even into later adulthood, evidence is showing that the desire for intimacy is still great.

Current medical treatments for men include Erectile Dysfunction (ED) medication such as Viagra, Cialis, or even more invasive Penile Injection Therapy. These medications are not safe for all individuals including those who have heart conditions, vision problems, or anemias. Treatment is temporary and used when an older adult is ready to be intimate.

For women treatment revolves around hormone balance. As females reach later adulthood sex hormones such as estrogen and progesterone fluctuate and can cause vaginal dryness making intimacy painful. Female libido can also decrease due to the fluctuations of female sex hormones. Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is used to add exogenous hormones into the endocrine system in efforts to maintain stable levels of hormones. Unlike ED treatment, HRT is a daily and systemic treatment that must be taken regularly.

Although the hands of time cannot be turned back there are nutritional and lifestyle adaptations that can make the transition from adulthood to later adulthood much more pleasant. Supplementing the body with minerals, vitamins, and other phytonutrients have the ability to offer the body the nutrients it needs to slow the natural progression of hormonal aging, increase circulation to the sexual organs, and alleviate vaginal dryness.

Beneficial Ingredients:

For Her

B12 – Vitamin B12 is needed so that your body can manufacture red blood cells, support the normal function of your nerve cells and is an energy booster. When you have optimal levels of vitamin B12 it heightens your sex drive, which enhances penile erection by enlarging blood vessels. It also stimulates secretion of histamine needed for orgasm.

B6 – The intake of Vitamin B6 is very important for women, especially those who are pre-menopausal. Vitamin B6 regulates the sex hormones and ups your libido by controlling raised levels of prolactin and regulating the production of estrogen, testosterone, red blood cells, serotonin, and dopamine.

Zinc – Zinc is required for the production of testosterone and production of sperm. Healthy testosterone levels in both men and women are important to a healthy sex drive. Zinc also aids in prostate health. Your prostate has a large amount of zinc, which helps regulate prostatic fluid. When there is a deficiency of zinc this hurts your prostate. Without a healthy prostate, you can’t have a healthy sex life.

Magnesium – Magnesium helps in the production of sex hormones like androgen and estrogen that regulate the urge down there. This mineral has documented aphrodisiac effects, which can improve your libido and sexual performance. It also helps to calm and relax you so that you can have an increased sex drive.

Fenugreek – Fenugreek is an herb used both in cooking and as a supplement. Some research suggests it may help boost libido. A study concluded that fenugreek may be an effective treatment to increase female sex drive

For Him

Tribulus The herb group showed significant improvement: more desire, firmer more reliable erections, and greater sexual satisfaction. In addition, several studies show that in men suffering from infertility, Tribulus (750 to 1500 mg day) improves sperm motility and quality.

Ashwagandha – Ashwagandha has been proven to raise the levels of testosterone significantly. This in turn helps to keep the testosterone levels optimum for the body’s proper sexual functioning. Ashwagandha is known to improve libido in men and hence, it is only natural for the sperm count to go up.

Cowage – M. pruriens seeds are a rich source of l-DOPA and its metabolites, which include epinephrine and norepinephrine. Therefore, an increase in dopamine level in the brain following M. pruriens treatment may not only induce the activation of sexual behavior but it may also increase plasma testosterone level.
