Can Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine Help With Infertility?

In the United State 8.8% of married women between the ages of 15 and 49 are unable to get pregnant after one year of trying (infertility). Men have an even higher instance of infertility at 9.4% of married men. This can leave couples struggling to start a family with no avail. Currently the Western medical model uses assisted reproductive technologies to increase the chance of couples to conceive. Oftentimes these therapies are costly, ineffective, and invasive. Current research into the role of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine has become promising as either a primary or adjunctive means to increase the likelihood of infertile couples to conceive.
Infertility in women and men can be caused by several factors and one single cause does not exist. These factors can include anatomical abnormalities, endocrine dysfunction, sex hormone imbalance, medications, exposure to noxious substances, and sexually transmitted diseases. The first step in developing a treatment option is a thorough investigation of the patient’s lifestyle, diet, family history, and relevant biomarkers. Similar to ARTs, Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine takes a precision approach to treatment and from the information used during the investigation a treatment plan is made that focuses on the root cause of the patients infertility.
Research from 8 Randomized Control Trials (RCTs) revealed that Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine outperformed In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) and cases that used both treatment options did even better. The study revealed IVF has an overall conception rate of 30%, whereas Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine had a 50% conception rate. While care for infertility can be costly, an increase of 20% is significant for a trying couple.
The exact mechanisms that allow Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine to work are poorly understood. Some theories propose that several chemical reactions induced by acupuncture or herbal medicine promote the endocrine, nervous, and reproductive systems to reach optimal functionality. Other theories propose that by improving overall health innate systems in the body are restored therefore increasing the possibility of conception.
